ABA TECH SHOW FEATURES SECURE DIGITAL PHOTOCOPIER
(NEW YORK, NY) - March 12, 2001
Evidence Exchange's Secure Digital Photocopier (SDP) will be on display March 15 - 16 at the ABA Tech Show in Chicago. The SDP is a significant new invention that will revolutionize computer discovery process. Test trials demonstrate a 75% savings through use of the Evidence Exchange service.

Clients will save time and money while reducing the risks of mismanaged discovery. The SDP takes electronic files of any format and converts them to readable, searchable and printable PDF files while it digitally notarizes them. It then creates a library of PDF files on CD-ROM, numbered, marked and branded. This process solves the problem of authenticating digital evidence at trial.

Joan Feldman, CEO of Computer Forensics and the leading legal forensic expert said recently when discussing the importance of Evidence Exchange's Secure Digital Photocopier, "We are seeing in the real world for our clients, both on the discovery side and also on the records management side some pretty profound implications and applications for this product." "The reality is that you are not going to be dealing with paper in two years. The real world is computer based." At the same Focus Group Meeting, James L. Michalowicz from the DuPont Legal Department thought back to a recent investigation where the Department of Justice was involved, "One thing I really learned was if I had Mike (Prounis) and Myron (Eagle)'s tool at that time it would have made life a lot easier. We got into so many issues in terms of the evidence exchange format and process, specifically how was the data collection process performed. I think there is application for this [Secure Digital Photocopier] software beyond just litigation!"

Initial trial tests of the new process have achieved a 75% savings of time and cost over current computer discovery practices when the final output is paper. Greater savings can be realized if paper productions are eliminated. The substantial elimination of paper from the discovery process has been a long discussed, yet unattained goal of lawyers and technologists. The current market for paper productions exceeds $10 billion. The rate of change in terms of the mix and status of discovery materials has gone in the last five years from 75% paper as the primary source to now where 75% of source material exists only in an electronic format. Within three years, federal courts will be mandating the use of PDF for all filings and pleadings. Since some of the records will already exist in PDF, the idea of using a secure, branded form of PDF for the exchange of evidentiary materials and the long-term preservation of trial exhibits, makes good economic sense.

The Secure Digital Photocopier breaks e-mail and e-mail attachments into discrete, but linked files, and extracts the equivalent of DNA from all computer-based, source discovery files and brands the original file's DNA (i.e., Digital Notary Algorithm) into an Evidence Exchange-created PDF rendering of the original file. PDF is the widely used format invented by Adobe Systems. These branded PDF files can be numbered and re-numbered, as required, marked confidential, etc. and still retain a cryptographic link through the PDF file back to the original file for authentication purposes, thus letting the branded PDF serve as a secure proxy of the original file. Branded PDF files can be searched for responsiveness and can be printed ten to twenty times faster than as a native format.
